The first 40 days. Franks own Diary

Frank is over half way across Missouri.

He called his office today 25th May from Boonville to say that he was going to change route slightly and go Southwest to avoid going through another large city. After his experiences of St Louis and Cincinnati which were not really walker-friendly he has decided to go via a more scenic route with lakes and pretty countryside and head towards the tiny town of Norwich, Kansas rather than press on through the centre of Kansas city. Such is the insularity of each state he has to wait until he reaches the state line before he can get a more detailed map to decide his exact route.

The weather this week has been cooler around 17C (60F) and the trail has been following a railway line (so no hills) along the Missouri River which has made it an ideal walking week. The people seem to be getting more friendly as he goes further West and this town still has a heart so he has stayed here for 2 nights. The town has some beautiful views from Harley park for 5 miles both up and down the river. Frank is not alone in making such a long trek the chamber of commerce is right next to the Katy Trail used for this part of the trip and the manager Bill Sullivan reckons they greet around 10 coast to coast walkers along this trail each year but not many from Europe. The town was also the site of the last execution in Missouri. It was also the site of one the first theatres in this area.Whatever it's history, Frank seemed to be quite enamoured with this small and friendly town but hopes cross into Kansas by next week.
